Thesis Proposal Defense
The METAS Lab congratulates Ms. Camille Andrea Flores on the successful defense of her MS thesis proposal “Genotypic and Phenotypic Characterization of Plant Growth-Promoting Bacteria (𝘌𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳 sp.) Associated with Common Bamboo (𝘉𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘢 sp.) Rhizosphere” on December 17, 2024 at the Institute of Biology (IB), College of Science, UP Diliman.

Master's Thesis Defense
Ms. Erika de Jesus, Master of Science in Microbiology Candidate, defended her thesis titled “Recombinase Polymerase Amplification (RFA) Assay for the Surveillance of Poliovirus in Surface Water and Wastewater Samples” last November 22, 2024, at the Institute of Biology (IB), University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD).
The thesis panel is composed of her Adviser Dr. Marie Christine Obusan and Reader Acad. Windell Rivera from UPD-IB, and Examiners, Dr. Fredmoore Orosco of Virology and Vaccine Institute, Department of Science and Technology, and Dr. Wei-Cheng Yang of the School of Veterinary Medicine, National Taiwan University. Celebration and Recognition of the DOST-SEI Scholar-Graduates
Dr. Arizaldo Castro and Dr. Maria Reynalen Mapile of the METAS Laboratory were given recognition during the Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI)’s 2024 In Touch with Excellence (ITWE), an annual celebration that acknowledges and honors scholars who have excelled academically. The event was held last October 29, 2024, at The PICC Forum in Pasay City, with the theme “Karunungang Taglay, sa Bayan Iaalay”.
Dr. Castro and Dr. Mapile were among the scholars of the DOST-SEI’s Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program (ASTHRDP) who recently finished their degree in Doctor of Philosophy in Biology (Specializing in Microbiology) at the Institute of Biology, University of the Philippines Diliman under the supervision of Dr. Marie Christine Obusan.

Best Undergraduate Thesis Competition 2024
Mr. John Nash Guzon of METAS Lab is one of the Finalists in the Institute of Biology (IB) Best Undergraduate Thesis Competition held on June 25, 2025 at the IB Auditorium.
Representing the Microbiology and Cell Biology Academic Group (MCBAG), Mr. Guzon presented his study "Genotypic and phenotypic antimicrobial resistance profiles of bacteria isolated from select domestic and poultry wastewater systems in Mega Manila, Philippines".
The study is supported by the DOST-GIA funded and PCIEERD-monitored project "Microbial Community Composition and Function for the Removal of Excess Nitrogen and Endocrine Disruptors in Wastewater Treatment under the research program “Removal of Excess Nitrogen and Endocrine disruptors from Wastewater (RENEW)".

METAS Lab congratulates Christian Mark Guyo, PhD student, for being selected as a Fellow of the PReMIERS (Plastics Research-Intensive Methods Internship and Educational Research Stay Program) of the Microbial Oceanography Laboratory (MOLab), Marine Science Institute, College of Science, University of the Philippines Diliman!
Through this fellowship, Christian is given the opportunity to be trained and attend an all-expenses paid two-month stay at the MicroQUIB Facility at the Bolinao Marine Laboratory, the Quicmapp Facility in UP Baguio, participate in fieldwork aboard the Circular Explorer, receive full support in conducting his proposed dissertation on microplastics in cetaceans and marine ecosystems, and be mentored under the PRIMe-TP Core of Advisers.
METAS Lab is excited and looking forward to building a collaboration with MOLab!

Cetacean Pathology Training and Workshop
METAS Lab, in collaboration with Philippine Marine Mammal Stranding Network (PMMSN) and other government and non-government organizations, will be hosting the "Cetacean Pathology Training and Workshop: Pathogenesis of Common Diseases in Stranded Dolphins" this coming June 24, 2024.
The training workshop is part of the project "Prevalence and genetic diversity of cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV) in cetaceans stranded in the the Philippines" funded by the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD).

Multiple news outlets have featured the latest study of METAS Laboratory on the detection of Toxoplasma gondii in seafood and vegetables collected from Central Luzon. This study is part of the current PhD dissertation of Ms. Cielo Paraoan, with Dr. Marie Christine Obusan as her advisor, and Mr. Ren Mark Villanueva as the Research Associate for the NSRI-funded project.

Ms. Chricel B. Lattao has been accepted in the 2023 MECO-TECO Sandwich Scholarship Program (SSP).
Ms. Lattao, a PhD student under the METAS Lab, will be working on her study on cetacean diseases under the collaboration among Microbial Ecology of Terrestrial and Aquatic Systems Laboratory - METAS Lab, Institute of Biology, and Marine Mammal Conservation Laboratory, Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology, both under the College of Science, University of the Philippines Diliman, and Conservation Medicine Laboratory, of Dr. Wei-Cheng Yang at the National Taiwan University.

METAS Lab congratulates its member and PhD Biology (Microbiology) student, Ms. Cielo Paraoan-Villareal!
The Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD-DOST) Region 3 will be funding her project “Toxoplasma gondii in select Irrigation Waters and Agricultural Soils of Central Luzon, Philippines: implications to human health (Toxo-IWAS)” under the Regional Research Funding (RRF) Initiative.
This project, which is part of the PhD framework of Ms. Paraoan, hopes to contribute to the agriculture and public health sectors in the Philippines.

Next Generation One Health Philippines Fellowship
METAS Lab member, Jamaica Ann Caras, was selected as one of the 15 fellows of the first Next Generation One Health Philippines (NGOHP) Fellowship. The NGOHP Fellowship Program is a project under the Planetary and Global Health Program (PGHP) of St. Luke’s Medical Center College of Medicine-William H. Quasha Memorial (SLMCCM-WHQM). With the goal of preventing future zoonotic spillovers over the next 50 years, the fellowship program aims to strengthen the Philippines' domestic capacity for One Health transdisciplinary research and knowledge translation in order to effectively address wildlife trade and biodiversity loss as drivers of infectious disease emergence.
The NGOHP Fellowship Program is a one year-program combining knowledge, research, and policy translation.
